Food hygiene scores on the doors - what do you think?

21st August 2007

LOCAL food businesses and the public are being asked what they think about a new initiative to improve food hygiene standards in public places in the Horsham District.

Food hygiene levels for the Horsham District’s eating establishments may soon be able to be viewed publicly, as work continues on a new initiative to raise standards.

If agreed, the ‘scores on the doors’ scheme would mean that all food businesses and eating establishments in the District would have their food hygiene inspection scores published on the Council’s website.

Up to 1000 premises in the Horsham District are now being consulted and Horsham District Council welcomes input from other interested parties and members of the public.

A survey is being sent to all affected businesses as well as parish and neighbourhood councils.

The questions are also available online (see link below) or by calling the Council for a copy (contact details below).

The closing date for replies is 30 November 2007.

Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Health, Cllr Brian Donnelly, said:

“I am pleased to say that the standard of food hygiene in the Horsham District is generally very good.

“However, we hope that improving public access to such information will give local establishments an even bigger incentive to strive for excellence.

“We welcome everyone’s feedback and I encourage everyone affected to take part in our survey.”

A further report with the results of the consultation exercise is expected at the Horsham District Council Cabinet meeting at the beginning of next year.

Further information about food hygiene and safety is available from Horsham District Council online or by contacting its Public Health and Licensing Department on 01403 215415 or email: publichealth.licensing@horsham.gov.uk
