Photographic Exhibition at Horsham Museum

27th September 2007

An exhibition by Horsham Photographic Society opens on Friday 28th September until January 2008 at Horsham Museum. HPS 2007 is a real treat for the eye as it shows what a friendly amateur society can do and achieve, and in the small but perfectly-formed gallery visitors can immerse themselves in a riot of colour and form.

There is an old saying that photographs never lie, nor does Horsham Photographic Society when it says all its members are amateurs. It is easy to see why visitors looking at these colourful, evocative and powerful images think that there must be professional photographers hiding within the Society. We can assure all visitors that Horsham Photographic Society is a society of genuine amateurs - those who do photography for the love of it. It is this passion, the blending of skill and artistry, which leaps out in this visually stunning exhibition.

In Post War Britain six businessmen with a strong interest in photography got together. They decided in 1949 to form a society of like-minded amateurs who could help the novice, inspire the competent and challenge the talented to produce ever- better photographs. Now, 58 years later, the results of this society’s work can be seen in the HPS 2007 exhibition.

HPS 2007 is an amazing, eclectic mixture of superbly-taken images, that in many a person’s hand would be holiday snaps; here though there are works of art illustrating such diverse subjects as a trip to the seaside or a visit to Cuba, to the more carefully composed image of a candle by a leaded window. Other images show that beauty can be seen in even the most industrial and brutal of architecture, as the photographer captured the strength and power of a bridge in London, with its metal arches.

Horsham Photographic Society emphasises that they want to attract members of all abilities and through their fortnightly meetings and network of support they can help new members to become skilled in techniques. These techniques will enable the photographer, as on show in the exhibition, to take dragonfly wings in focus and sharp, rather than fuzzy and lifeless.
