Swan sculpture to return
3rd October 2007
HORSHAM’S iconic and much loved swan sculpture is to return to the town’s Swan Walk Shopping Centre in the New Year.
Speaking yesterday (2 October), Tom Crowley, Chief Executive of Horsham District Council, said:
“Horsham District Council has been in partnership with Norwich Union and its asset managers, Morley, since the shopping centre was built in the 1970s.
“This afternoon I met Chris Paterson, Fund Manager (Retail) of Morley, with whom we have been in dialogue for sometime regarding alternative locations for the sculpture.
“I am pleased to say we have agreed a way forward and Chris has confirmed the swans will be re-instated within the centre.
“I agreed that we will initiate a joint consultation with local organisations and the wider community about the details of where within the centre would be best.
“Lorne McKean, the sculpture’s artist, and The Horsham Society will be invited to be part of the panel to work with the Council and Morley on the details of re-instatement.
“The intention is that once a decision is made on this point, in the very near future, the sculpture will be returned as part of the planned refurbishment works which will start in January 2008.”
Adding to these comments, Cllr Liz Kitchen, Leader of Horsham District Council, said:
“I am absolutely delighted that the swan sculpture will soon return to its rightful home in Swan Walk Shopping Centre and I would like to thank those involved for taking this decision.
“Morley deserves credit for listening to the voices of protest and having the courage to respond quickly.
“Swan Walk Shopping Centre, and in particular its manager Gill Buchanan, have made a significant contribution to the wellbeing of Horsham over the years now that this issue has been resolved to everyone’s satisfaction I am sure that our local community will continue to support this important shopping facility.
“I would also like to thank the Council’s Chief Executive, Tom Crowley, for agreeing a solution which will be beneficial to everyone.
“This is a perfect example of Council officers and members from all parties working together for the good of the town.”
