Go green for Energy Saving Week
11th October 2007
AS PART of The Energy Saving Trust’s eleventh Energy Saving Week (22-28 October) three events are being put on locally to promote energy awareness in households across the Horsham District.
To be held in Pulborough, Billingshurst and Storrington, the events will provide top tips on how to cut energy consumption, information on loft and cavity wall insulation, heating, renewable energy grants and much more.
The events are being organised by Horsham District Council with the West Sussex Energy Efficiency Advice Centre.
Cllr Robert Nye, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability at Horsham District Council, commented:
“I am proud to support The Energy Saving Trust and encourage residents of the Horsham District to be aware of their energy consumption levels.
“We can all do our bit - however small - to reduce the amount of energy used and these events are a great way to get information and be inspired.”
Details of the local events are as follows:
| Sunday 21 October 2007 | RSPB Pulborough Brooks Autumn Fayre, Pulborough |
| Friday 26 October 2007 | Budgens Supermarket, Billingshurst 10am – 4pm |
| Tuesday 6 November 2007 | Villerest Place, Storrington |
Horsham District Council has teamed up with the West Sussex Energy Saving Trust Advice Centre to offer energy saving tips that can help save energy and money too:
- Turn your thermostat down. Reducing your room temperature by 1°C could cut your heating bills by up to 10 percent. You could save around £40 per year.
- Is your water too hot? Your cylinder thermostat shouldn't need to be set higher than 60°C/140°F.
- Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows.
- Always turn off the lights when you leave a room.
- Don't leave appliances on standby and remember not to leave appliances on charge unnecessarily.
- If you're not filling up the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher, use the half-load or economy programme.
- Only boil as much water as you need (but remember to cover the elements if you're using an electric kettle).
- A dripping hot water tap wastes energy and in one week wastes enough hot water to fill half a bath, so fix leaking taps and make sure they're fully turned off!
- Use energy saving light bulbs. Just one can save you £60 over the lifetime of the bulb - and they last around 10 times longer than ordinary light bulbs.
