How to eat for good health
27th November 2007
NUTRITIONAL advice workshops are being given to older people in the Horsham District.
And any older person or organisation wanting to join one is being asked to put their name forward.
The workshops have been organised in order to help the growing numbers of older people who face the challenges of cooking healthily for one on a restricted budget.
The free to attend sessions aim to provide people with basic nutrition information and help them understand food labels.
The project has resulted from actions mentioned in the Older Persons’ Community Strategy and was developed in partnership with Horsham District Age Concern.
A nutritionist has put together the content for the workshop sessions and has also designed a 14 day menu planner that contains ideas and recipes for healthy meals. Each workshop participant is given a pack containing the menu cards at the end of the session.
Speaking recently, Councillor Andrew Baldwin, Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Support at Horsham District Council, said:
“There are many reasons why older people may find it challenging to eat a balanced, healthy diet.
“As the residents of the Horsham District grow older it is important to make sure that quality of life is maintained as much as possible.
“A good diet can go a long way to ensuring a comfortable life.”
Sessions were first run at the end of 2006 in sheltered housing schemes. Thanks to their success they are now being delivered in residential homes across the Horsham District.
Consideration is also being given to how the nutrition advice project can be expanded to reach older people living independently and also to aid cooks working in retirement homes.
Other social groups such as luncheon clubs are also being invited to participate.
