District Council Tax recommendation

21 February 2008

TO HELP pay for Horsham District Council duties and services in the year from April 2008 the District Council’s Cabinet last week (14 February) recommended that the council tax for a band D house should rise from £125.19 per year to £128.97 (equivalent to an increase of 29 pence per month).

This proposed 3% increase in council tax for Horsham District Council’s services will apply to all households in the Horsham District.

The decision whether to accept this recommendation will be made at the full Council meeting on 27 February.

After the Cabinet meeting, Cllr Gordon Lindsay, Cabinet Member for Finance and Assets at Horsham District Council, said:

"The Council has recognised the need for low Council tax increases and has kept increases for next year to 3%.

“Not only have there been no significant cuts in services but the Council has managed to invest more in two important areas, namely economic development and housing.

“This has been achieved against a background of only 1% increase in government grant with even lower increases in grant for the following two years.
“Expenditure has been rigorously examined and charges for services increased, but only to affordable levels.
“The Council will continue to pursue more efficient ways of working so that the success story reflected in the 2008/09 budget can be continued into future years."
