New national bus concession

14 March 2008

FROM 1 April 2008, a new national bus concession will be available for eligible residents of the Horsham District to get free off-peak travel on local buses anywhere in England.

Residents who are aged 60 and over and eligible disabled people will be entitled to the new buss pass, which extends free travel countrywide from the existing countywide scheme.

Existing bus pass holders will be automatically issued with the new bus passes, which will be sent the week before the start date and there is no need to contact Horsham District Council.

Residents will be able to use passes from 9am Monday to Friday in the Horsham District. This is in addition to the standard scheme; most other areas offer off peak hours of 9.30am until 11pm Monday – Friday. The passes can also be used all day at weekends and bank holidays.

The pass will show which local authority issued it, so drivers will therefore be able to identify those eligible for additional Horsham District concessions.

The new bus pass is a smartcard which is a plastic card containing a microchip which can store information electronically. In most areas the national pass will be used as a ‘flash pass’ and shown to the driver when boarding.

Passes for the national bus concession will be free to the public but replacement passes will be charged at £5.
