Local Housing Allowance

2 April 2008

HOUSING benefit for people renting from private landlords will change this month.

There will be a major change in the way Housing Benefit is paid out to people who make a claim on or after the 7 April 2008. This will be known as Local Housing Allowance.

It will only be applicable to ‘non housing association’ private tenants and the new system will be quicker to administer and more transparent. It will also allow tenants to take greater responsibility and give them control of their money.

Flat rates will be set according to property size and type so claimants will know exactly how much their Housing Benefit will be based on.

Payments of Local Housing Allowance will be paid direct to tenants living in private rented accommodation.

Other councils around the country have tried out this scheme since 2004 with success.

Delivering this project locally is the work of the CenSus partnership of Adur District Council, Horsham District Council and Mid Sussex District Council.
