Horsham Music Week 2008

8 April 2008

LAST year saw music bands ‘Hula Bluebirds’ on Horsham’s Carfax bandstand, ‘Purple Stained Cats’ in the Youth Centre, a ‘Thingumajig’ in the Market Square and even a couple of ‘Dogs in Space’…yes it could only be one thing, the Horsham Music Week.

Not to rest on their laurels, the Horsham District Live Music Alliance (HDLMA) is once again teaming up with Horsham District Council and planning a Horsham Music Week 2008.

The dates for this year will be Friday 20 June to Sunday 29 June with the emphasis being firmly on participation and involvement from local bands and musicians.

Like last year there will be a three pronged approach to organising the event.

The first involves compiling a comprehensive free brochure highlighting and advertising any music event occurring between Friday 20 June and Sunday 29 June. This could range from a full on orchestra to a one person band busking in Horsham’s West Street.

Some 15,000 copies of the document will be produced and distributed throughout the Horsham District with details of participating bands, musicians, locations and times.

The second will see the HDLMA organising several gigs in the town, including two nights at the Town Hall and the ever popular Rock on the Bandstand, featuring some of the top local talent and offering a chance to kick back, relax and soak up the last of the evening sunshine in Horsham Park.

Finally, support will be offered, where possible, to other groups wanting to organise their own events. For instance, if pubs want to hold a music event but are unsure of how to do this or how to contact bands the HDLMA should be able to help and point them in the right direction and even find some equipment if necessary.

Nick Jenkins, Arts Development Officer at Horsham District Council, said:

“Last year was loads of fun with a real variety of acts across Horsham.

“The Blue Flash Music Trust held a folk day on the Forum, High Gain Promotions had a youth rock night at Hurst Road Youth Centre, the HDLMA had several events held across the week, the Bridge House Pub in Copsale seemed to have something on every night and there was music on Horsham’s Carfax bandstand every lunchtime; in all I think there were 30 odd events with some 250 musicians and singers taking part.

“We would like to go a stage further this time and help smaller venues organise their own event or at least publicise what they are doing, it would also be great if we could get more of the District involved including some of the smaller villages.

“The response has already been very positive from groups wanting to be involved so all is looking good for June.”
