Senior Persons’ Council - how to get involved

10 April 2008

OLDER people are being invited to contribute to the Horsham District’s Senior Persons’ Council even if they cannot attend meetings.

The Senior Persons’ Council is keen for residents who, for whatever reason cannot attend meetings, to be able to contribute their ideas and concerns to Horsham District Council for attention.

The Senior Persons’ Council was established three years ago with the aim of giving older people in the Horsham District an opportunity to put forward their ideas to the District Council and to undertake their own initiatives to benefit the local community.

The Senior Persons’ Council empowers its members to identify issues of concern and take action to address them.

People from Horsham District Age Concern, the Pension Service, the Community Link alarm scheme and Horsham District Council have also attended the meetings and are available as a point of contact.

Recently achievements of the Senior Persons’ Council include:

  • helping produce a highway code for mobility scooter uses leaflet
  • helping to deliver  nutrition sessions to groups of older people in response to concerns that a growing number of older people are malnourished
  • campaigning about the closure of local post offices
  • together with members of HYPER (Horsham Youth Council), participating in a consultation to help inform the Council’s housing strategy
  • contributing ideas for inclusion in the 2008/9 Older Persons’ Community Strategy Action Plan

Flyers and posters advertising the Senior Persons’ Council are being distributed around the Horsham District to encourage older persons living in the area to make their views heard.
