Local elections in the Horsham District - not this year
17 April 2008
LOCAL elections are not taking place in the Horsham District this year.
When Horsham District Council was established the constitution stated that elections for the whole Council would be held every four years.
The Horsham District’s last elections were in 2007 on 3 May and the next District elections will be held in 2011. They will be held in conjunction with elections for all the Parish Councils in the Horsham District.
Some 176 out of 387 local authorities have elections this year particularly in London and the metropolitan areas. Some district and borough councils in West Sussex do have elections this year as they were set up to elect a third of their council every year.
This autumn, Horsham District Council will be sending out forms to every property for residents to register at their address for the 2009 Register of Electors. This register is the one that will be used for the elections in 2009.
The County Council elections will be held on 7 May 2009 and the European Parliamentary elections in June 2009 (although the Government has taken powers to combine the two elections), and of course a Parliamentary election could be held at any time up to May 2010.
If residents move before an election they can re-register up to 11 days before polling day or ask for a postal ballot paper to be sent to their new address.
Electors who have opted to vote by post will receive their voting papers about ten days before an election. The deadline to apply for a postal vote at election time is eleven days before the election day.
