Spice of Life Sprinkled on Horsham Museum
25 April 2008
“Elderly person, not shy of coming forward, given new lease of life, scrubbed up well, tackles everything from gardening to photography, sculptures to “hot gossip”, family history to spring cleaning desperately seeks hoards of admirers for fun time in May, permanent commitment desirable”
That is how a Lonely Heart column might well describe Horsham Museum over the coming month as it lets rip with a full and active program for all in the month of May.
To celebrate national Museums and Galleries Month, Horsham Museum has, for the first time, put on an ambitious program that displays the diversity of areas tackled by the 115 year old. Starting on 1st of May with a major exhibition on Shelley the programme gets in its stride as the award winning gardening team answer your questions two days later. Now on a roll, the museum sprints forward with an exhibition by John Wincentzen, the Horsham man who sculpts for Wedgewood (opening 8th May). And the term “silver surfer” was made for Horsham Museum as its web site launches its World War II exhibition “We’ll Defend our Islands” showing that it still remembers the anniversary of the end of World War Two in Europe.
Being a “scholar and gentleman” it goes without saying that it is also an Englishman (or woman) and so will be celebrating, like the rest of Horsham, in Horsham’s English Festival on 10th May with special not to be missed events. As the month progresses there is the launch of two new services aimed at helping all clubs and societies, a book sale to help eke out Museum funds, new trails around the museum, a genealogy/local history day and a treat for those that love old views, Cramp’s Horsham - a photographic exhibition.
Horsham museum in May shows that “Variety’s the very spice of life” and it is certainly the case with this much loved institution. As William Cowper, the 18th century poet with Horsham connections, who wrote that famous saying, went on to say “That gives it all its flavour”.
