Cleaner greener town centre

1 May 2008

HORSHAM town centre’s recently installed ‘green’ bins are being used well with analysis showing that 79% of materials collected in them is recyclable.

Horsham District Council carried out the checks following the introduction of the eight new recycling bins around the town centre.

The new bins allow shoppers to recycle their cans and plastic bottles rather than putting this recyclable rubbish into the town centre’s litter bins.

An estimated one third of litter is recyclable and needlessly ends up in landfill.

Horsham District Council hopes that the introduction of the new recycling bins will divert some of this recyclable element away from landfill and encourage shoppers and town centre visitors to be more aware of their litter.

Speaking about the new bins, Councillor Robert Nye, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability at Horsham District Council, said:

“We hope that the introduction of these bins will encourage shoppers to dispose of their plastic cans and bottles so they can be recycled.

“The Horsham District has an excellent level of recycling and I hope this will continue to improve with these new facilities.”
