Not Many People Know That.....

7 May 2008

"Not many People Know That" is the often quoted saying of Sir Michael Caine, whose English credentials make it a perfect title for a brand new trail round Horsham Museum that explores Horsham’s English past. The free trail is being launched on 10th May, Horsham’s English Festival Day. For the launch Horsham Museum is offering those that get 80% or more of the answers right on the 10th May a free draw to win an “Old Horsham” souvenir gift set.

To help entrants along the following will give readers at least three of the answers:

Not many people know that – Horsham is the birth place of English culture. Around 5,500 BC, after Britain had became an island, the people living in the Horsham area made tiny little flint flake tools not found anywhere else in Europe. Thus we have the first signs of what it means to be English – doing things differently to our continental cousins.

Not many people know that – Chesworth House on the outskirts of Horsham was once owned by the Kings and Queens of England and used to fund their lavish lifestyles. Charles I and Charles II and his wife all owned Chesworth, as did Queen Elizabeth I.

Not many people now that – John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress contains the ‘Pilgrims hymn’ – “He who would valiant be.” Today this popular hymn is sung to a tune called Monks Gate, named after the Horsham village where Ralph Vaughan Williams first recorded it being sung in 1904.

Not many people know that – Sir Michael Caine, whose first professional job was working in Horsham, never actually said “Not many people know that”, but he does have a fondness for unusually and quirky facts, a feature of this brand new trail being launched on 10th May.

“Not many people know that” launches on 10th May Horsham’s English Festival Day. Successful entrants on this day will enter a free draw to win an “Old Horsham Gift set”, traditional items with a very modern twist, like Old Horsham itself.
