And Now For Something Completely Different!

7 May 2008

Calendar Girls, that popular British film, humorously portrays one of the great problems for many clubs and societies. Believe it or not, it is not getting people to strip for charity – that is easy -it is getting speakers for social events and talks. In Calendar Girls the final straw was the umpteenth talk about broccoli, reminiscent of the 101 uses of a dead cat. Talk organisers throughout the land who have “been there, done that and got the T shirt” over this issue will surely appreciate a new approach. Now thanks to a brand new service offered by Horsham Museum help is at hand – something completely different.

Called Touching Memories Daily this brand new, innovative service is offered free to over 240 clubs and societies in Horsham as well as all the village organisations that make Horsham and District such a popular place to live. For twenty years Horsham Museum has been offering its internationally recognised Touching Memories loan service to Residential and care homes. Consisting of a box of objects based around a theme the boxes are used to stimulate conversation for everyone to join in. The service is in demand from Worthing to Guilford as well as in the numerous nursing homes in the Horsham district as the Museum lends out objects specially donated for the purpose.

Now, for the first time, this service will be made available to all clubs and societies in 6 specially made boxes, from “Happy Holidays” to “Health and Beauty” with “Making and Mending” somewhere in between - a wealth of material in boxes that can be borrowed for a period of one to five days. This service will enable talk organisers to run something completely different. It's fun, it's adult and it is free – what more could a talk organiser want. With hints on how best to run a session this service gives a great opportunity to break the ice, to find out more about one another and to encourage discussion and chat.

If you want to find out more come along on Wednesday 14th May from 2 - 4pm at Horsham Museum.

Editor please note: Eileen Weild, Touching Memories co-ordinator, will be at Horsham Museum on 14th May from 1pm onwards for photo opportunities.
