airAlert helps asthma sufferers

23 May 2008

A NEW service has been launched locally to help asthma sufferers.

airAlert, a free air quality alert service for asthma sufferers and people with other respiratory conditions, is now available in the Horsham District and across Sussex.

Horsham District Council (Public Health & Licensing Department) has been working as members of the Sussex Air Quality Partnership to provide this free advance warning service to those residents with respiratory conditions who may be affected by poor air quality within the Horsham District.

People wanting to use the service can register with airAlert online and then receive messages to either their mobile, home telephones or via email at times when poor air quality is predicted.

The service is designed to inform people who may suffer from a pollution episode the day before it is expected, so as to help them make informed choices about managing their respiratory health.

In addition to airAlert, a service aimed at delivering this advice at school aged children is also being launched called airAlert-4-schools where the advance warning is sent directly to the school so that they can ensure those pupils most likely to be affected by poor air quality episodes are prepared.

Any schools within the District are eligible for the airAlert-4-schools service free of charge.
