Summer litter campaign launched
5 June 2008
‘YOUR District, Your Choice’; Horsham District Council’s summer litter campaign was officially launched last weekend (31 May) during the Steyning Festival.
Horsham District Council’s Steyning Neighbourhood Wardens teamed up with volunteers from the Downland Conservation Scheme along with residents during two litter picks which took place on Saturday as part of the Live Lounge music event.
The litter picks were designed to encourage attendees of the event to use the land in a positive way.
Speaking of the initiative, Kylie Calder, Neighbourhood Warden for Steyning, Bramber and Upper Beeding, said:
“It was really pleasing to see people getting involved in cleaning up litter.
“We are very fortunate to live or work in such a beautiful area and it is critical that people treat it with the respect it is owed, which includes taking rubbish home or putting it in a bin.
“The festival was a big success and we hope an example was set to people attending that dropping litter is not acceptable.”
The summer litter campaign, which is being run by Horsham District Council across the whole Horsham District, will focus on education and communication, along with some enforcement work provided by the Council’s Street Scene Team which can issue £75 on the spot fixed penalty notices to any person found to be depositing litter.
Among other elements the campaign features a schools competition to raise awareness of the dangers associated with litter.
Cllr Robert Nye, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability at Horsham District Council, said:
“We are continuing to appeal to everyone to dispose of their litter responsibly and I thank everyone who does this.”
Greg Charman, Community Safety Officer for Horsham District Council, added:
“We hope the title of the campaign ‘Your District, Your Choice’ says it all.
“This is about giving people a choice, but making them aware of the consequences if they choose not to put their litter in a bin.
“We are proud of the Horsham District and hope that residents feel the same way.
“By all doing our bit we can continue to keep the area litter free and a pleasant place in which to live, work or visit.”
