Success at the 2008 LABC Sussex Built in Quality Awards

12 June 2008

LABC Sussex, part of LABC South East, recently held its first Built in Quality Awards ceremony at the Old Ship hotel, Brighton – where more than 40 winners were presented with certificates and trophies.

The award scheme, which was open to architects, designers, builders and construction professionals, was supported by local authority building control services throughout Sussex and the prestigious event was attended by more than 160 professionals from across the construction industry.

The Built in Quality Awards scheme highlights the importance of Building Control in achieving high standards - acknowledging the role that building regulations play in the creation of high performance buildings - and gives well deserved recognition to companies and individuals within the construction industry who are committed to producing high quality buildings throughout Sussex.

The Sussex Building Control winners on the evening included two first prize awards for The Oaks at West Chiltington in the Best Flats/Apartments and Other Residential New Build category and Sunnybank, Henfield for the Best Sustainability category.

Millwood Designer Homes Ltd, created three superbly crafted detached family homes in a beautiful woodland setting in West Chiltington and first prize was awarded to them for their outstanding craftsmanship and quality. By working with the building regulations, Millwood has produced three highly desirable, high quality homes built from many locally sourced materials.

Vanessa Good, Business Development Manager at Sussex Building Control, commented:

“The Oaks is a true reflection of the excellence that we strive to deliver at Sussex Building Control.

“We are so pleased that Millwood won this award for what is a very high specification, high quality development and we wish them luck at the LABC National Built in quality awards in October.”

Mr Jones, the owner of Sunnybank won first prize for the design and build of a sustainable retirement home for him and his wife. Their desire for low running costs stimulated the commitment to incorporate as many sustainable elements as practical.

High efficiency solar panels were selected for water heating when appropriate, winter hot water and accommodation heating is achieved with a Nibe ground sourced heat pump supplying under floor heating throughout. This system also provides passive cooling on the rare occasions the British climate dictates!  A Villa-Vent air handling installation recovers heat from exhausting stale air to heat the incoming filtered fresh air. The owners have also installed a 5,000 litre water trap and a ‘Bio-Disc’ effluent treatment to enable them to re-use water and combat rising water costs.

Martin Gentles, Head of Building Control at Sussex Building Control, said:

“Achieving Sustainability is high on the agenda here at Sussex Building Control and this year’s training and Continuing Professional Development are dedicated to this highly important topic so we are delighted that Mr Jones won first prize for his sustainable retirement home in Henfield.

"We offer him our best wishes for the LABC National Awards at the Grosvenor House hotel, London.”

Sussex Building Control was formed in 2006 through the joining of the building control departments of Crawley Borough Council and Horsham District Council. This rich heritage, combined with membership of the national LABC, means Sussex Building Control is able to offer the highest level of local expertise, together with consistent national representation, through a network of over 4,000 building control surveyors across England and Wales.
