Help for parents with teenage children

16 June 2008

THE first in a series of parenting programmes has been launched by Horsham District Council for parents whose teenager’s behaviour might be a problem at home or within the community.

The course will last two hours a week for six weeks and will teach parents how to understand teenage behaviour and how to break bad behaviour cycles. The start date for the course is expected to be in the next few months.

Speaking of the initiative, Greg Charman, Community Safety Officer at Horsham District Council, said:

“Parenting a child is one of life’s biggest challenges and, for many, the teenage years are the most demanding.

“Despite being responsible, too few parents look at their technique and consider different approaches which can often create a different response.

“For many, this is a chance to take guidance on strategies that work and is a real opportunity to change old habits.”

The course has been developed by a local counsellor who lectures at universities on teenage behaviour. The programme includes breaking behaviour cycles, understanding normal teenage behaviour, how to gain confidence in dealing with teenagers, effective communications, and saying ‘no’.

One parent, who attended a pilot course held recently, said:

“I have enjoyed the course and have taken lots from it.

“It has been good to listen to other parents’ stories and learn more about how my parenting techniques can have an impact on my teenage son.

“I’d recommend it to anybody.”

The classes are organised by Horsham District Council and supported by the Horsham District Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (HCDRP). There is a charge of £130 per parent wishing to attend.

Speaking this week, Cllr Andrew Baldwin, Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Support at Horsham District Council, said:

“The course sets an excellent example of how we can positively address problems facing some parents today.

“I hope the initiative will greatly benefit not only the parents who attend, but their children and the local community as well.”
