Youth campaign to eat breakfast

7 July 2008

MEMBERS of Horsham Youth Council (HYPER) are carrying out a campaign to encourage more young people to eat breakfast.

The project was started after results of a lifestyle survey of 14-15 year olds by West Sussex County Council in 2007 showed that 78% of boys and 64% of girls ate breakfast.

The “Feed Your Brain Breakfast Campaign” will be delivered to nearly 3000 Horsham school pupils. The assemblies, which focus on why breakfast is important and ideas for quick, healthy breakfasts, have already started at Tanbridge House School in Horsham.

Pupils also get a free goodie bag containing a factsheet, a lifestyle quiz and a sachet of cereal.

“The project is going really well,” said Shelley Denman, Young Persons Officer at Horsham District Council.

“Members of HYPER not only got the project started but also secured funding from The Food Standards Agency, which is fantastic experience for them.”

Cllr Andrew Baldwin, Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Support at Horsham District Council, added:

“This kind of project is an excellent example of the valuable work HYPER does.

“The Youth Council provides a necessary voice for the district’s young people aged between 13 and 18 and I would encourage more youngsters to become involved.

“I meet monthly with them and we find it a great way of exchanging views and listening to their concerns and opinions.”
