Snack Wagon returns to Horsham Park
22 July 2008
THE Snack Wagon is returning to Horsham Park through the summer holidays.
The Snack Wagon was launched in 2003 and is a joint partnership of Horsham District Council and West Sussex Youth Service.
The initiative aims to provide a safe space for young people to meet their friends, receive impartial advice on issues that affect them and provide a base where youth work can be delivered.
The goal is also to reduce the number of young people engaging in anti-social behaviour. Previous issues covered at the Snack Wagon have included sexual health, drugs, alcohol, careers and housing.
This summer’s project hopes to increase awareness about alcohol and its effects on young people and to empower them to make informed and responsible choices.
The Snack Wagon will be located by the Skate Park, an ideal location for workers to engage with young people.
Last year approximately one hundred 13-18 year old young people visited the project each evening.
The Snack Wagon offers not only information and support, but also free jacket potatoes and water. This year the potatoes and fillings are being generously supplied by Sainsbury’s, Horsham, which is supporting this part of the project.
A young person who attended last year’s Snack Wagon said;
"It’s been great – I’ve learnt loads about alcohol and the free food is excellent."
Liz Kerim, Locality Youth Worker for West Sussex Youth Service, said;
"This wasn’t a project about judging; it focuses on sharing information and empowering the young people to make informed decisions regarding their own alcohol intake and staying safe."
Councillor Andrew Baldwin, Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Support at Horsham District Council, commented:
“The Snack Wagon is a great example of partnership working, delivering important information to young people and informing them of issues that might be affecting them.
"I am really pleased to see this initiative returning and look forward to the positive impacts of its work."
Over the summer the Snack Wagon will also be in Roffey and Southwater during the summer holidays.
