Junior wardens measure up
7 August 2008
UPPER Beeding’s Junior Wardens were out in force using a Speed Indicator Device (SID) last week (31 July) on The Street in Bramber.
The Junior Wardens measured the amount of traffic and speed for two hours along the road and will record their findings to pass on to Bramber Parish Council.
Speaking on the day, Horsham District Council Neighbourhood Warden Paul Sweeney - who helped supervise the project - said:
“The Junior Wardens learned a lot using the Speed Indicator Device and also set a great example to other children in the community.
“By seeing for themselves how much traffic is on the road and how fast it goes, they will become more aware of their own safety and others.”
Junior Wardens are aged 9-10 and attend regular organised events throughout the year where they work alongside the adult Neighbourhood Wardens to help improve the local area.
These community events include street patrols, litter picks, recycling work, garden projects, visits to the elderly and other fundraising schemes.
Cllr Andrew Baldwin, Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Support at Horsham District Council, said:
“The Junior Warden scheme is about raising awareness of community issues in young residents and instilling a sense of responsibility and pride in their environment.
“It is also a good way to promote citizenship amongst young people and complements the citizenship element in the school curriculum.
“The scheme also helps the children and young people meet new friends, develop their social skills and have fun.”
