Take a bite - The Big Nibble is back!

1 September 2008

WHAT better way to celebrate the launch of the Horsham and District Food and Drink Festival from 6 September to 5 October 2008, than with the legendary Big Nibble - a day long event that puts the spotlight on delicious, healthy and seasonal local produce and having fun!

The Big Nibble is part of the Horsham and District Food & Drink Festival, which Is the brainchild of Horsham District Council.

Originally launched in 2003 to support the many local producers in the District that were suffering from the knock-on effects of foot and mouth disease, it has grown in popularity each year with more businesses now recognising the value of using local produce together with the businesses that are growing it.

Stretching across the County, the Festival includes over 100 local businesses that are passionate about local produce. They're opening their doors to everyone with some incredible events, fantastic offers and local food and drink.

With an increasing number of consumers wanting to know where their food has come from and how many miles it has travelled, a Festival celebrating all that is good and great about local traceable food and drink from local producers, is just what the doctor ordered.

The Big Nibble is the most hotly anticipated event in the Festival calendar.

The venue is Horsham Town Centre, on Saturday 6 September, 10am to 4 pm and there's something for everyone.

Outside Horsham Town Hall, award winning chefs will be taking it in turn to cook delicious dishes in a portable kitchen, using local ingredients from the surrounding stallholders and shops.

Ian Dowding, the inventor of Banoffee Pie and the ex-chef from the Hungry Monk in Jevington, will create a three course meal on a shoestring budget.

Rob Bookham of award winning Bookham Fine Foods and Hilary Knight of A Taste of Sussex will be making a "full of goodness soup" and the head chefs of AA rosette starred Mannings Heath Golf Club and the Felbridge Hotel & Spa will be demonstrating their culinary flair too.  Make sure that you take the free recipe sheets on offer.

There will be a Big Nibble Trail, starting with a farmers market in the Carfax. Bring your empty shopping bags because you will be tempted by an unbelievable display of local produce, from home baked bread to free range local meat, chutneys and pickles, Sussex cheeses, Sussex wine, award-winning Sussex beer, local fruit and vegetables and much more.

If local ale floats your boat, don't miss the Horsham Beer Trail, where you can sample local ales in nearby pubs for just £1!

Many local shops, restaurants and cafes will also be running some great special offers as part of the day including Waitrose, which will be setting up out of store with a fantastic assortment of local produce tastings.

This year, there are three excellent Masterclasses in Horsham Town Hall.

If you love local cheese, then listen to Sarah Hardy of Sussex High Weald Dairy.

The Incredible Edible Gingerbread Company will be demonstrating how to make an amazing gingerbread house and if you're a beer connoisseur, then award winning Andy Hepworth of Hepworth breweries is your man!

The Masterclasses are very popular and tickets for all sessions are available in advance and on the day from the Horsham Tourist Information Centre, 9 The Causeway.  Call 01403 211661. With limited places and tickets priced at just £5 each (including lots of nibbles and tipples), you are advised to book in advance to guarantee your place!
