Advice about wood burning stoves

2 December 2008

PEOPLE who install a wood burning stove are being advised to make sure that the appliance is approved by the industry trade body ‘HETAS’.

Sussex Building Control is receiving an increasing number of enquiries from local residents who have recently put in place wood burning stoves but have not received the required certificate from their installer.

A number of people are switching to wood burners and approval for new stoves is required either through Building Regualtions or by HETAS, the official body recognised by the Government to approve solid fuel domestic heating appliances, fuels and services.

On investigation a number of local residents are discovering that although the installer gave them a registration number, they are in fact not HETAS approved.

Without HETAS approval for either a new or second hand stove, there are potential risks of carbon dioxide emissions, invalidation of a house’s insurance and potential difficulty in selling a property without the necessary certificate.

The need for a certificate or Building Regualtion compliance applies to all wood burning stoves installed after April 2006.

More information about HETAS, registered installers and making sure the wood burning stove has the correct certificate is available online or by calling 0845 634 5626.
