FIRE BRIGADE

Fire Brigade Badge

West Sussex Fire Brigade is a specialist department of West Sussex County Council. Our main functions are to save life and property from fire, to provide fire safety and fire prevention advice and to provide an emergency rescue service.

The brigade has 28 fire stations and 6 fire safety centres as well as network of support departments all aiming to deliver an efficient, quality service to the highest possible standards of professionalism and courtesy.

All fire brigade services are free with the exception of those which could reasonably be expected to be provided by other agencies and which involve no risk to either life or property. Charging for these exceptions is at the discretion of the County Fire Officer.

The fire brigade deal with all fires in an efficient and professional manner, using our training and equipment to keep the damage to your property to a minimum. You will also receive advice after the fire on getting things back to normal.

Undertaking Rescues
People are rescued if they become trapped, whether it be as a result of a road accident or a lift shut-in. Skilled firefighters, using the latest equipment, will be sent to deal with the problem and, working closely with other services, will keep distress to a minimum.

Animal Rescue

Fire Engine If an animal is believed to be trapped we will obtain advice from the RSPCA and, if the animal is in distress, we will immediately despatch one of our animal rescue units. All rescues, from a hedgehog to a horse, will be dealt with compassionately.

Dealing with Other Emergencies
Firefighters are trained and equipped to deal with a vast range of emergencies. This includes spillages of dangerous chemicals which endanger life or the environment, floods, aircraft emergencies and train incidents.

Education
Good habits never start too early, so specialist officers visit schools and groups to talk to children about the dangers from fire. As well as a structured programme of fire safety education, specialist courses are also run for youth organisations to help their members become safer citizens.

Advise on Fire Safety
Our fire safety centres are open from 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday to provide free advice. Answerphones enable messages to be left outside of these hours. Concerns over a fire or life risk are directed to Fire Control, a 24 hour a day facility, from where an officer will be on the road within 15 minutes of notification of a possible danger to life.
