HOUSING STRATEGIES AND DEVELOPMENT
Housing Strategy
We have developed a new Housing Strategy to take us to 2013. Identified in the Strategy are five key priorities:
- Tackling affordability and meeting housing need
- Preventing homelessness and supporting homeless households
- Improving the quality of life for vulnerable people through housing and related support
- Supporting sustainable rural communities by meeting housing need
- Ensuring we have the means to deliver
We will be monitoring our Strategy and proving annual updates. If you have any comments on ways we could improve our Strategy, please contact us.
Homelessness Strategy
The Homelessness Act 2002 requires all local authorities to produce a Homelessness Strategy at least every 5 years. Our new Homelessness Strategy takes us to 2013, and is a result of multi-agency working and be informed by a thorough review of homelessness in the area and of the services currently available to address it.
Rural Strategy
The need for affordable housing is particularly prevalent in rural areas. Our villages are in danger of becoming exclusive enclaves for the wealthy. Young people that have grown up and schooled in the villages are moving away, leaving essential local services unsustainable. The Rural Affordable Housing Strategy has been formulated to address housing need in the rural areas of the District
Empty Homes Strategy
Empty properties are a wasted resource, especially when housing is in such short supply. They can also be targets for crime and anti-social behaviour such as fly tipping. Bringing properties back into use enhances the whole community.
Newsletters
We are now producing regular newsletters to communicate our progress in meeting the District’s housing needs, explain how we work and address some of the issues faced.
