SAVING ENERGY
The average home in the Horsham district spends £766 per year on fuel bills, and, through energy use is responsible for releasing 8.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Most energy is made by burning fossil fuels. Fossil fuels have a high carbon content which is released as carbon dioxide when burnt. Carbon dioxide is one of the main pollutants responsible for global warming and climate change. Saving energy helps reduce pollution. Improving energy efficiency through insulation and good house keeping practices is an easy and cheap way to reduce costs and it is better for the environment too.
- Switch off lights when they are not needed and avoid leaving televisions and computors on stand-by
- Turn down thermostats by 1oC (The World Health Organisation recommends a temperature of 21oC in living rooms)
- Insulate wall and lofts (there are grants for this) and draught-proof doors and windows
- Consider changing fuel suppliers to one that uses renewable fuel sources
