REUSABLE BAG CAMPAIGN

Horsham District Council is committed to encouraging the shift away from single-use carrier bags in the District.

An estimated 13 billion plastic carrier bags are handed out to UK shoppers every year, this makes an average of 300 per person per year. Each bag is used for an average of only 12 minutes before it is thrown away.

Most bags end up in landfill, where they can take hundreds of years to decompose. Some retail outlets do offer recycling facilities, but only one in every 200 bags gets recycled. It is estimated that nationally plastic bags make up about 100,000 tonnes of waste to landfill.

Single-use bags are basically a waste of resources. Tackling resident’s dependency on single-use bags is just a first step in engaging people to make the necessary changes for a more sustainable lifestyle.
