About the role:

Horsham District Council invites applications from anyone who wishes to take on the role of ‘Independent Person’ to assist it in its duty of promoting and maintaining high standards of councillor conduct.

By law, the council’s procedures for handling complaints about the conduct of councillors must include the involvement of at least one person independent of the council. That person, when appointed, will be required to attend meetings (currently most meetings are held virtually via video conference platforms), to participate in discussions and to give views before or during any formal hearing.

We are looking for candidates interested in securing probity and integrity in public life. Applicants will need to be independently minded, objective, possess good communication skills and be able to work as part of a team. In particular, it is important for the right candidate to have the ability to formulate an impartial and evidence-based view.

The successful applicant will need to be available to attend meetings from time to time during the day, amounting perhaps to one day a month on average. In view of the requirement for daytime meetings the council has two Independent Persons either of whom may be called upon to give a view on any given matter.

This role pays an annual allowance, in addition to the recovery of relevant expenses.

Please attach the declaration document from the Related Files below along with your application, applications received without a declaration document will not be considered.

For an informal discussion please contact Sharon Evans, Monitoring Officer, on 01403 215538.
