We are now accepting applications to work at the 2024 Police and Crime Commissioner Elections. For a full election we employ over 100 staff to work on the count and over 250 staff to man our polling stations.

Polling station staff

Poll clerks are required to:

  • check a voter's name, address and ID and issue ballot papers
  • assist the Presiding Officer throughout the day

Presiding Officers are responsible for:

  • the management of the polling station and supervision of the work carried out by the Poll Clerks
  • completing official paperwork
  • opening and closing the polling station
  • transporting the ballot box to the count venue once the polling station has closed

Polling station staff are required to be on shift in the polling station from 6.30am to 10.30pm. You would need to stay on site for the duration of the day and therefore must bring food and drink for the duration of your shift.

Each station has a Presiding Officer and poll clerks. You do not need to have any experience to work as a poll clerk.

  • £217.00 for a Poll Clerk (including training payment)
  • £29.38/hr for Count Staff on the Sunday

After you apply

Once staff have told us they're available and provided the required information, we'll allocate on a first-come, first-served basis. We have 67 polling stations covering the Horsham District, from Village Halls, to libraries, and even a pub! If you express a preference for a particular role, or to work with certain colleagues, we will try to take that into account. However, the needs of the overall election will take precedence and we will allocate staff as we need to run the election. For particular roles allocations will be made based on previous experience and performance.
