New survey invites young people to have their say on safety

05 May 2021

Local young people of the Horsham District are being encouraged to share their views on public safety issues with Horsham District Council’s Community Safety team via a newly developed survey.

The Council is keen to engage with and listen to the views and ideas of local young people about their safety.

The Young People’s Safety Survey aims to gather the views of as many young people as possible around locations in their communities, finding out about where they feel safe, and where they feel unsafe, and what can be done to make public spaces safer.

The Council will then work with groups of young people on the feedback received in order to put as many of their ideas into action as possible.

Over the summer months, teams of youth support workers will be going out and about with the Mobile Community Hub (formerly known as the Snack Wagon), the Purple Bus and the Police Engagement Bus to meet with young people where they are gathering and encourage them to complete the survey.  An electronic version will also be sent out via secondary schools in September.

In addition to the safety survey, the Council is also  looking to recruit 16-18 year olds to act as ‘media representatives’ and get involved in writing articles, making films, and advising on how best the Council can target messaging to young people in the District.

Commenting on the engagement programmes, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community Matters and Wellbeing Cllr Tricia Youtan said:

I am really pleased that we are embarking on these new youth engagement projects at this time.

This past year has proved very difficult for many, not least our young people, so I hope that as many of them as possible get involved and give us their views to inform our plans going forward.
