UK’s largest electric vehicle charging project set to benefit thousands of drivers in Horsham District

As a result of close collaboration between Horsham District Council and West Sussex County Council a major electric vehicle charging point project contract has now been signed with Connected Kerb which will enable the large scale roll out of thousands of public electric vehicle chargepoints across the county and Horsham District within the next decade.

For the Horsham District, this project will see thousands of chargepoints installed on streets, in public sector car parks and on community facilities, helping many drivers without off street parking to go electric.

This will greatly benefit residents and businesses across the whole of the District, greatly boosting overall electric vehicle uptake amongst many sectors.

This project will be part of the UK’s largest electric vehicle chargepoint deployment by a local authority, providing a blueprint for other local authorities across the UK to deliver affordable, reliable, and accessible chargepoints in their thousands.

The first stage of the project for the Horsham District is to replace existing charge points that have become unreliable or are not working properly. These are located in the North Street car park in Horsham, the Six Bells car park in Billingshurst and the library car park in Storrington.

Commenting on the project, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy Cllr Chris Brown said:

This is excellent news for the Horsham District.

By increasing publicly-accessible electric vehicle charging points we can encourage wider use of electric vehicles in our towns and villages, working towards improving both general air quality for residents and overall environmental credentials, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.

This is a major step forward to help improve sustainability in the District and contribute towards our carbon neutral goals.”

This ambitious new charge point network will give residents the confidence to go electric in time for a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles in 2030. It is one of the first steps in delivering the ambitious vision set out by Horsham District Council to reduce carbon emissions across the area to address climate change.

UK-based Connected Kerb is fully funding the project and will also manage and maintain the chargepoints on an ongoing basis. The company has extensive experience of working with local authorities and public sector organisations.
