Council bestow Honorary Alderman title on former councillors

Horsham District Council has bestowed one of the highest honours in its gift in conferring two former councillors as Honorary Aldermen for their outstanding service and dedication to the Horsham District.

Eve Mauchel and Godfrey Newman were conferred with the title of Honorary Alderman at an Extraordinary Council Meeting on 8 December 2021.

Eve Mauchel was a Member of Horsham Urban Council from 1967 to 1972 and of Horsham District Council from 1973 to 1995.

She held the position of Chairman of Horsham District Council in 1984 and during her time at the District Council was Chairman of Leisure & Recreation Committee and also sat on the Establishment (Employment) Committee. She was also a member of Horsham Forest Neighbourhood Council and served as a Justice of the Peace from 1975 to 1999.

Godfrey Newman was a member of the Council from 1991 to 2021 for Forest Ward. Throughout his tenure he was a member of the Standards Committee, the Planning Committee (North),  the Audit Committee, the Overview & Scrutiny Committee, the Personnel Committee, the Policy & Resources Committee, the Finance & General Purposes Committee, the Housing Committee and the Leisure Services Committee.

Chairman of the Council Cllr David Skipp commented said:

With so many years of service between them, they have contributed greatly to the work of the Council through their wisdom, knowledge and vast experience, for which we are all exceptionally grateful.

They have served the Council and the people of Horsham District with enormous dedication and the Council agreed that they each be honoured by the conferring of the title of Honorary Alderman.
