In response to public questions considered at Full Council on Wednesday 16 July, Horsham District Council is pleased to confirm that it will support communities who are looking to introduce 20mph speed limits. The Council will also work with Parish Councils who wish to develop Local Walking and Cycling Plans.

20mph limits have many proven benefits for improved air quality, safer streets and smoother traffic flows. They can create a quieter and more pleasant environment for residents and businesses and enable more people to walk and cycle safely.

Councillor Ruth Fletcher, Cabinet Member for Planning and Infrastructure, commented:

“As a council we will support local communities, such as Cowfold and Storrington, who wish to implement 20mph limits where there is public support and in suitable locations.

Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (known as LCWIPS) are also useful in accessing external funding pots and provide guidance that can assist planners and developers to deliver active travel infrastructure that meets the needs of local communities.

We would like to congratulate all those who have come together to develop the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan for Steyning, Bramber and Upper Beeding. It has involved extensive effort and community consultation and is an impressive piece of work.”

The Council are committed to improving active travel across the District and will assist in its role as the Local Planning Authority, recognising the importance of enabling more active travel to create better, safer, healthier and more accessible towns and villages.

To assist in this, Horsham District Council is also in the process of recruiting a full time Active Travel Co-ordinator who will be able to support the plans’ development.
