Armistice Day 2025

On Armistice Day (Tuesday 11 November) there was a short service for those who wished to remember the war fallen on the ‘eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month’ in Horsham’s Carfax.

Prayers were led by the Rev’d Cannon Lisa Barnett and the Exhortation was delivered by the Chair of the Horsham Branch of the Royal British Legion Zäl Rustom. The Last Post was sounded by Leader of Horsham District Council Cllr Martin Boffey.

Neighbouring schools and organisations were also in attendance.

There was a one-minute silence at 11am after which official wreaths were laid, led by Horsham District Council Chairman Cllr Tony Bevis on behalf of the people of Horsham District.

At the end of the service the War Memorial was opened for public wreath laying.

Additionally, this year we conducted a short service at Hills Cemetery in Horsham to commemorate the loss of a Portuguese soldier Manoel de Mottos, who sadly died in 1918 at a Portuguese military training camp which had been set up in Horsham.

He is buried at Hills Cemetery and his grave is marked with a Portuguese military headstone. A Portuguese wreath was laid by Col. Teresa Bettencourt Cabral, Military Attache from the Portuguese Embassy.

Working with St Mary’s Church and Horsham District Council, the Horsham Branch of the Royal British Legion was the main local organiser of Horsham's Remembrance services.
