A boxing programme in Billingshurst has become a key tool in tackling boredom and mental health issues and inspiring young people. More recently it has seen the rise in success for one local participant resulting in them entering the competitive boxing arena.

Horsham District Council’s Billingshurst Neighbourhood Wardens first had the idea about introducing boxing as a sports activity for the village when they experienced how taking up a new sport benefitted the lives of local young people.

When the Wardens launched their Youth Boxing Programme in 2022, following consultation with young people over local youth provision at the time, the goal was simple: to give every young person a chance to discover the power of sport.

One young person who embodies this spirit is local participant James White. Since joining the boxing programme, he has shown exceptional dedication and passion, training week after week and developing not only as a boxer but as a person. Now, his hard work has paid off, as James is hoping to step into the ring for his first competitive match early next year.

Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Sam Raby commented: “I am thrilled that James has made so much progress with his boxing and is reaping so many benefits from this programme and I wish him the very best of luck going forward.

“I am also delighted that this programme has been received so well in Billingshurst and that it is having such a positive effect on the young people taking part.

The programme is now key to helping young people learn new skills, gain confidence and extend their positive experiences into their communities and school life.

“Thank you to all involved for investing their time in making this such a community success.”

James added: “The Brighton & Hove Boxing Team’s emphasis on discipline, belief and the right knowledge has helped me to progress faster in boxing as I continue to push mental and physical barriers, I set myself.

“This mentality can be adapted into other areas of life, such as school, where I have learnt to believe in myself and trust what I can do when I put my mind to it.”

Hosted by The Weald School and supported by generous funding from Billingshurst Parish Council, the scheme has become more than just a boxing club, it’s a place where confidence grows, friendships form, and potential is realised.

Working with the World Boxing Council Cares UK and the Brighton and Hove Boxing Team, the programme opens its doors to 11 to 17 year-olds from all backgrounds, offering high-quality training in a safe, welcoming environment.

Thanks to the Billingshurst Lions Club, club members are now also proudly wearing sponsored training clothing, helping to build a strong sense of unity, belonging and pride within the group.
