Primary school classes are invited to come up with a fun name for one of Horsham District Council’s new food waste collection trucks that are now travelling across the District.
The winning entry will win £50 for the school and a special visit before the end of term from the truck with the winning name on it.
To support schools in this, the Council has partnered with Wastebusters who provide a free primary school pack offering everything needed to introduce, embed and sustain food waste recycling within a school setting. Their resources include a structured Teacher’s Guide alongside a ready-to-deliver assembly and presenter’s notes, plus team activities, worksheets, posters, bin signs, certificates and more.
Commenting on the initiative, Cllr David Skipp, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Environmental Health, Recycling and Waste, said: “We are delighted to be running this competition to introduce our new fleet of trucks and to celebrate the successful roll out of our new food waste collection service.
We are really looking forward to seeing what names the children come up with based around food waste and recycling.
“Our aim is to help encourage children and their families to understand food waste and why reducing and recycling food waste is so important, both for the environment and also to help reduce household food bills.
“We are grateful to all our residents who together managed to divert more than 550 tonnes of food waste from waste to recycling in just two months since the launch.”
The closing date for entries is 6pm on Friday 12 June.
