Winning pupils name new food waste collection trucks

Published: 16 Jul 2026

Horsham District Council recently invited primary school pupils across the District to come up with fun and imaginative names for two of its new food waste collection trucks.

Pupils were asked to submit names inspired by food waste, recycling and the environment. The competition was launched to celebrate the successful roll out of the Council's new weekly food waste collection service and to help raise awareness among children and their families about the importance of reducing and recycling food waste.

The Council is delighted to announce the winning entries:

Colgate Primary School with Green Monster Muncher

Kingslea Primary School with Food-y the Dude-y.

The winning pupils recently had the opportunity to meet the trucks bearing their chosen names and see them in action.

The Council would like to thank all the schools and pupils who took part in the competition. It also recognises the fantastic support shown by Horsham District residents, who have helped divert more than 1,000 tonnes of food waste from general waste to recycling in just three months since the service was introduced.

Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Environment, Recycling and Waste, Cllr David Skipp, said:

"It was wonderful to meet the winning pupils and see their excitement when they came face to face with the Green Monster Muncher and Food-y the Dude-y trucks."

"The competition was a fun and engaging way to encourage children to learn more about recycling and the positive impact food waste collections can have on the environment. It also provided valuable support for teachers in helping pupils understand sustainability and the importance of reducing waste."

"Thank you to everyone who entered and shared such creative ideas. I'd also like to thank our residents for embracing the new food waste collection service and helping to make it such a success. Together, we are reducing waste, increasing recycling and making a real difference to the environment."

Barry Humphreys, Environmental and Sustainability Lead Governor at Colgate Primary School said:

“We are thrilled that Colgate Primary School has won the opportunity to name one of Horsham District Council's new food waste recycling trucks.

“The school works very hard to look after the environment and the dedicated team of pupil eco-ambassadors have introduced a series of recycling and environmental initiatives.

“This work has recently been recognised with the school being awarded the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag (with merit), a national accreditation that acknowledges the ecological achievements of young people.”
