Wheels for ALL helps people living with Parkinson's and stroke survivors get back in the saddle

People living with Parkinson's and stroke survivors have been rediscovering the health benefits of cycling thanks to a series of specialist sessions run by Horsham District Council's Sports Development team and the Horsham Wheels for ALL inclusive cycling programme.

This summer, the popular programme expanded to offer adapted cycling sessions specifically designed for people affected by Parkinson's and stroke, creating new opportunities for participants to enjoy cycling in a safe, supportive environment.

Held on the athletics track at The Bridge Leisure Centre, the sessions featured a wide range of specially adapted bikes and trikes to suit different abilities and mobility needs. Experienced Wheels for ALL instructors were on hand throughout to provide guidance and support, helping participants build confidence and enjoy their cycling experience.

More than 50 people attended the sessions alongside carers, family members and support staff. For many members of the Horsham Parkinson's Group, it was their first opportunity to try adapted cycling and, for some, their first chance to ride a bike in many years. Three dedicated sessions were also held for members of the Phoenix Stroke Club during August.

The sessions not only gave participants the opportunity to become more active, but also offered valuable social interaction and a chance to reconnect with an activity many thought they might never enjoy again.

Commenting on the success of the sessions, Horsham District Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, Cllr Mark Baynham said:

"I am delighted that so many people took part in these specialist cycling sessions and experienced the enjoyment and freedom that cycling can bring.

"For a number of participants, this was the first time they had ridden a bike for many years. Some had believed that, because of their condition, cycling was no longer possible for them.

"I am particularly pleased that several participants have since expressed an interest in joining our regular weekly Wheels for ALL sessions and continuing their cycling journey.

"Supporting healthy, active lifestyles for all residents is a key part of our commitment to building thriving communities where everyone can flourish. These inclusive cycling sessions are an excellent example of how we are helping people of all abilities to access physical activity, improve wellbeing and feel connected to their community."

Horsham Wheels for ALL is an inclusive weekly cycling programme, taking place between April and October, that provides opportunities for people with additional needs and disabilities to enjoy cycling. The programme offers a wide range of adapted cycles and trikes, with trained and experienced instructors available to provide support and encouragement.

Open to people of all ages and abilities, the sessions are designed to help participants become more active, improve confidence and enjoy the physical and mental wellbeing benefits of cycling. Sessions cost just £5 per person, while parents, carers and siblings can also take part free of charge.
