Underused garage sites could become much-needed social rented homes, giving more local people a secure and genuinely affordable place to live.
Plans to build 22 new social rented homes on underused garage sites across Horsham District, providing much-needed affordable homes for local people, are set to go before the Council’s Cabinet.
The development would provide a mix of one, two and three-bedroom homes and would be offered to eligible households on the Council’s Housing Register when they are first completed and then each time they become available in the future.
The homes are proposed for seven underused garage sites in Southwater, Horsham, Billingshurst, Steyning, Coldwaltham and Pulborough. They would be available at social rent, making them more affordable for people on lower incomes
As well as creating much-needed family homes for local people, the proposals would bring previously developed land back into new use and improve the appearance of local neighbourhoods and help reduce opportunities for antisocial behaviour.
Cllr Belinda Walters, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, said: “Everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to call home.
The proposal would provide 22 new social rented homes while turning underused garage sites into welcoming places to live.
“Providing more affordable homes is a key part of our Council Plan, and these proposals would make a real difference for local people and their communities.”
The Council’s Cabinet will be asked to approve the proposals when it meets on Wednesday 23 September 2026. The plans have been developed through partnership working between Horsham District Council and Saxon Weald. If approved by Cabinet and Full Council, work is expected to begin across the seven sites throughout 2027 (following confirmation of funding and other development requirements).
