Abandoned Vehicles

What you can do about abandoned vehicles

If you know the vehicle owner, our first advice would be to ask them politely to move it. After all, they may not be aware they’re causing a problem.

However, do not take the law into your own hands by intervening, such as making physical threats or attempting to move the vehicle yourself. You may make the situation worse and even risk committing an offence yourself.

If you find an abandoned vehicle that doesn’t appear to be stolen, please report it using the link below.

We will decide if a vehicle has been abandoned if at least one of these applies:

  • It has no keeper on DVLA’s database and is untaxed - check vehicle tax online
  • It’s stationary for a significant amount of time (over a week)
  • It’s significantly damaged, run down or unroadworthy, for example has flat tyres, missing wheels or broken windows
  • It’s burned out
  • A number plate is missing

If a vehicle has the following we won’t consider it to be abandoned:

  • A current MOT
  • It’s taxed

If a vehicle is blocking an entrance you will have to contact parking services.
