Swifts in flight

We have established a unique and innovative five-year partnership between Sussex Wildlife Trust (SWT) and Horsham District Council in response to the urgent pressures on biodiversity. Its main objective is to initiate the development and delivery of the Horsham District Nature Recovery Networks.

As it is Swift Awareness Week this week it seems timely to share with you details of one of the initiatives taking place currently which is the Swifts Project Team, within the Sussex Wildlife Trust's Storrington and Arun Valley Regional Group. It was launched last year. and so far over 50 boxes have been installed with support from  Wilder Horsham District.

Small groups of volunteers are now active in Storrington & Sullington, Pulborough, Billingshurst & Amberley and the Sussex Wildlife Trust are expanding into West Chiltington during the current season. They would now like to get an idea of what is going on in other villages within our region of the county.

There are a scattering of records on Swift Mapper but the SWT would like to particularly hear from anyone who has knowledge of Swift nests in Ashington, Washington, Findon, Fittleworth and Stopham as potential villages to include in our project for 2024.

If you are aware of nest sites or have seen Swifts flying low around buildings screaming in the evenings in these villages, please let the team know.

If you would like to get involved with monitoring Swifts in your area, please contact: swtstorringtonregion@gmail.com
