Home energy – making green choices the new normal

Sustainable Energy at Home event
26 October, 1pm-3pm, FREE
St John’s RC Church, 3 Springfield Rd, Horsham RH12 2PJ

The Transition Horsham Energy Group will host this free event that is open to all. The first part will include short talks by local insulation, solar and heat pump installers – and by Energy Group members (all Horsham residents) on their experience of having these technologies installed.  All the speakers will then be available to answer questions, based on their knowledge and experience. They will also try to identify other sources of help if they do not immediately have answers!

This event will be an extension of the Sussex Green Hub which is opposite at the United Reformed Church. The Sussex Green Hub takes place on the last Saturday of every month.

Many people now understand why we need to reduce fossil fuel use. The pace of technical developments in energy is exciting. Nationally, there are huge and necessary ambitions. But there are still real practical obstacles to ensuring it is normal and straightforward for an individual to, say, choose a heat pump rather than a new gas boiler.  And there are also many misconceptions about the costs and practicalities of green energy choices – which hinder uptake of energy efficiency measures, heat pumps, solar PV and other steps.

What is Transition Horsham

Transition Horsham may be best known for its community allotment on Chesworth Allotment Site and its Seedy Saturday Seed Swap, which takes place in February/ March each year. The allotment - now twelve years old - allows volunteers to grow food in ways which support nature with a low environmental impact.

Transition Horsham recently formed the Transition Horsham Energy Group, so that they can support each other - and others - noticing the need to talk through options, informally, with others who have some knowledge and experience, but no personal financial interest.

The group are purely volunteers, not qualified trades people or experts, just enthusiastic local residents who have used the services of tradespeople and experts to try to save energy and move to renewable sources and they want to share the knowledge gained through their experience. They are also working in other ways to become less reliant on fossil fuels, particularly in their own homes. This means saving energy (and money!) where possible – and moving to renewable sources.
