Council welcomes long awaited decision on 27 Arundel Bypass

23 Oct 2020

Commenting on the decision about the A27 bypass, a Horsham District Council spokesperson said:

As a council we are pleased that after much consultation a preferred route for the A27 Arundel Bypass has now finally been announced.

“The bypass has been the subject of much debate over many years. It is much needed, particularly by the southern villages in the Horsham District, as it will reduce congestion, improve air quality and enhance road safety, which will bring considerable health and wellbeing benefits for village residents.

“Additionally, the new proposed route will support local employment and subsequent economic growth.

“The current single lane road is a regular bottleneck with road users often choosing to use the surrounding country roads through our villages to avoid traffic queues, which in turn has created rat-running traffic, not appropriate or safe for the design of these roads. The new route will mean fewer heavy goods vehicles and significant reduction in air pollution in areas where air quality has been a problem for years.

“We now welcome the fact that with this key decision and these proposals in place, one of the largest Government infrastructure investments for West Sussex can now become a step nearer reality and the planned work can make a start, improving the quality of life for our residents.”
