Residents are being invited to have their say on a public consultation regarding the proposed designation of a new conservation area in Horsham Town Centre. The consultation will run from 1 September to 6 October 2022.

The new conservation area, if adopted, would include parts of Norfolk Road, Norfolk Terrace, Wellington Road, Chichester Terrace, Barttelot Road, Park Terrace, Park Street and East Street and would be called the Park Terrace Gardens Conservation Area.

The Council have produced a Draft Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan for the proposed conservation area.

I welcome this consultation as it gives local residents the chance to shape the future enhancement and protection of this area.

I would encourage as many of you who are eligible to come forward and express your views.

Cllr Lynn Lambert, Cabinet Member for Planning and Development

The Council’s Cabinet Member for Horsham Town Cllr Christian Mitchell added:

We rightly are concerned about preservation of our environment, but our urban environment and our heritage are important too.  This consultation given residents the opportunity to have their say.

Cllr Christian Mitchell, Cabinet Member for Horsham Town

Conservation areas were introduced through the Civic Amenities Act (1967).

Conservation areas exist to manage and protect the special architectural and historic interest of an area and contribute to forming a unique sense of place. Horsham currently contains 37 conservation areas which are spread across the District.

The designation of an area as a Conservation Area means that the Local Planning Authority can control more closely any changes that might affect the environmental quality of the area and seek to protect and enhance the “special character” of the area for the benefit of all its residents and businesses.

We would welcome any comments that you may have with regards to the designation of the proposed conservation area and also the appraisal and management plan.
