Listed buildings

What is a listed building?

A listed building is a building that has special architectural or historical interest. Listed buildings are protected from demolition or unsuitable alteration. The older a building, the more likely it is to be listed.

There are more than 1800 listed buildings in Horsham District.

There are three grades of listing for buildings:

  • Grade I – of exceptional interest
  • Grade II* - of particular importance and perhaps containing outstanding features
  • Grade II – of special interest which warrant every effort being made to preserve them

All parts of a building are listed, externally, internally and sometimes detached outbuildings within the property.

Listed buildings are protected using the Horsham District Planning Framework. We handle applications for listed building consent, but we do not give buildings listed status. All listing is carried out by Historic England.
