Adopt a Street volunteer scheme

Do you have an interest in your local area and want to see it looking clean and tidy? Join our Adopt a Street scheme which already has hundreds of volunteers across the District who are passionate about protecting and preserving the environment on their doorstep.

Volunteers choose the area they want to adopt, and we will provide all the equipment they need to help with the clean up, including:

  • Litter pickers
  • Plastic bags
  • Gloves
  • Hi-Vis vests

We will collect any litter that you have picked up during the campaign. Please contain the litter within sacks, bring it back to your address and let us know the location by calling 01403 733144 at Adopt a Street and we will collect it from you.

We also provide health and safety training and help with coordinating the volunteers.

A road we drive through regularly – Greenhurst Lane – was constantly covered in litter, mainly fast food wrappers and drink cans but also car parts, lamps and wing mirrors. My partner Roger and I decided to contact the council having read about their new Adopt-a-Street scheme. The council supplied us with all the equipment, safety gear and advice we needed to get started.

The first time we went out it took 2 ½ hours to clear the lane but it really made a big difference. Now it only takes an hour every 3 or 4 weeks.

We would definitely recommend the scheme. It gets you out in the fresh air and is a great form of exercise and it really cleans up the area.

Clean-ups in your parish

To find out more about clean-ups in your area, check your local Parish Council’s website, or contact your parish clerk to see if they may be interested in organising a community clean up, perhaps as part of the annual Great British Spring Clean (see below).

Great British Spring Clean

Every year Horsham District Council backs Keep Britain Tidy's annual litter campaign - the Great British Spring Clean - calling on #LitterHeroes across the District to help improve the environment on their doorstep. This usually takes place in March. We offer help through the loan of equipment such as bin bags or pick up sticks to help you in your work as part of our Adopt a Street initiative, and we will also collect any litter that you have picked up.

If you use the support of Adopt a Street  services during the annual Great British Spring Clean, please share your litter picking endeavours on your social media feeds (tagging @HorshamDC, #LitterHeroes) and we will share them too. Thank you.

Organise your own event

If you would like to organise your own litter-picking or clean-up event, we can provide equipment and we’ll collect any bagged or large litter after the event. Please email adoptastreet@horsham.gov.uk ahead of any event, or call 01403 733144.
