Premises, events and alcohol licences

FIFA World Cup 2026

We are now approaching the final stages of the Football World Cup and the Government have updated the original order to address the delays in starting time of matches and provide certainty for all licensees, customers and the authorities.

Now, if an England game is delayed/interrupted due to weather, the hours for the sale of alcohol (and late night refreshment) are extended until 30 minutes after the end of the game. If the game is postponed and rearranged the Order will extend hours on the day of the rearranged game.

The amended Order applies provided your licence permits the sale of alcohol for consumption on the premises to at least 11pm on the evenings of England games on Saturday 11th, Wednesday 15th July and the third/fourth place final on Saturday 18th July if England loses the semi-final.

If England reach the Final on Sunday 19th July then for the extended hours to apply your Premises Licence must permit the sale of alcohol for consumption on the premises until at least 10pm that day.

The below advice is offered to Premises showing the matches.

  1. Ensure that they have the relevant security in place to help support the safe and effective running of a venue. Consider controlled entry such as tickets only so venues can manage demand.
  2. Decant all beverages into plastic drinking vessels to help support safety and ensure areas are kept clean and clear of debris.
  3. Manage alcohol consumption levels amongst patrons to prevent drunkenness. It’s OK to refuse to serve patrons if you feel they have had sufficient to drink and/or are likely to cause problems. Several venues are closing premises for a period of time to allow for the venue to “re-set”  before kick-off so that patrons can be managed more effectively
  4. Be mindful of those individuals who are excluded due to Pubwatch, and do not allow them into your venue.
  5. If issues start to present in your venue, ask for help from the Police where needed as early as possible to prevent an escalation of the situation.
  6. Challenge patron behaviour swiftly which is likely to cause alarm, distress or offence for others in attendance.  Pay particular attention to lone individuals who may need particular support.
  7. “Have fun and Stay Safe"
