Apprenticeships at the Council
Horsham District Council has successfully taken on 19 apprentices over the last few years, seven of which are still with us in full time roles four years later. We offer apprenticeships to new entrants and there are also opportunities for current staff to develop their career, or even to change careers through an apprenticeship-funded qualification.
Our apprenticeship programmes are about helping talented people to get experience in local government, gain qualifications and get paid at the same time. Whether it is a first step or a career change, an apprenticeship-funded or vocational qualification can help you start your journey to career excellence. And don’t think apprenticeships are just for ‘youngsters’ - you can be any age to do an apprenticeship-funded qualification.
Apprenticeship types
We have recently offered apprenticeships in a variety of professions and at different levels including:
- Housing Services
- Human Resources
- Public Relations and Communications
- Customer Services
- Community Safety and Wellbeing
- Parking Services
Whichever department you are keen to work for, we are united by one aim: constantly striving to make the lives of people living, working and visiting the district better. If playing a part in that excites you, then one of our programmes could be right for you.

- Zoe, our HR Apprentice commented as she approached the end of her CIPD Apprenticeship:
“Having looked for a job in HR for a while, nothing seeming suitable for someone with no experience, so an apprenticeship seemed like the right path to follow. My manager has been so supportive and helpful in my studies and I have really enjoyed the learning process along with working. I am really looking forward to finishing my course in a few weeks and developing my skills with a supportive team behind me.”
- Gill, our employee of over 20 years decided it was time for a new challenge and started studying for a degree to allow them to qualify in their role, they commented:
“I enjoyed my previous work but I wanted to branch out and it seemed a natural progression to expand my skills whilst working for the Environmental Health team. It’s been hard work studying for a degree at the same time as working and managing my family life, but it’s been very enjoyable and I am grateful to the Council for allowing me to learn new skills whilst earning. I look forward to graduating and fulfilling my new role in the Environmental Health and Licensing team.”

What you can expect from our apprenticeships
Our programmes last for 12 months or longer, depending on the apprenticeship. They have lots to offer, including:
- A competitive apprenticeship salary
- A nationally recognised apprenticeship scheme
- Valuable hands-on experience working alongside highly experienced colleagues
- Guidance and career support along the way through a work-based mentor
Your training will be flexible, tailored to your needs and the requirements that your apprenticeship must meet. Each module of your programme includes on-the-job and off-the-job training. You will attend face-to-face and online workshops, as well as spending time on self-study. You will have regular discussions with your line manager and assessor to review your progress and your individual development plan.
Once you have gained your apprenticeship, we will provide advice and guidance to help you further your career.
Who can apply?
We welcome applications from people of any background for our apprenticeships.
The key to your success is:
- genuine enthusiasm for learning; being comfortable with new tasks and challenges aimed at developing your skills and experience
- an ability to learn quickly and being open to instruction, guidance and feedback
- a keen interest in the role you’re applying for and what we do as a Council
- feeling motivated by the opportunity to play a part in improving the lives of people living, working and visiting Horsham
In addition you must:
- Have the right to live and work in England.
- NOT be enrolled on another apprenticeship or further / higher education programme at the time of your application.
- NOT already hold a qualification at the same or higher level in the same or closely related field to the apprenticeship you are applying for.
