Hackney Carriage taxi licences

Apply for a Hackney Carriage vehicle licence

A taxi, also known as a Hackney Carriage, can be taken from a taxi rank or hailed in the street.

If a taxi is on a taxi rank then it is available for hire, and the driver is duty bound to take your fare, within the district, and cannot refuse to carry you unless they have a reasonable excuse.

To drive a taxi, you must have a licence for the vehicle and a licence for the driver.

To apply for a taxi vehicle licence, please complete the following steps:

  • Read the vehicle licence conditions. This includes vehicle criteria and conditions of the licence
  • Email licensing@horsham.gov.uk and request the application form.
  • Print the form, sign it and return it to us with your licence fee, registration document and insurance policy. You can post or email us copies of these documents, as long as you bring the originals when we inspect your vehicle
  • We will supply you with a Garage Inspection Form once you have applied
