Apply for a Hackney Carriage taxi vehicle licence
If you would like to drive a Hackney Carriage vehicle, you’ll need to apply for a Hackney Carriage vehicle licence. The process of applying for the grant of a Hackney Carriage vehicle licence is as detailed below.
You will already hold or be in the process of applying for a Hackney Carriage Driver Licence
Before proceeding please read the Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Vehicle Licence Conditions
- Check if your vehicle type is acceptable by Horsham District Council. For details please see our Licensing Policy
- Complete a Hackney Carriage vehicle application Form (Find the New Application PDF download below or email licensing@horsham.gov.uk to request an application form to be sent to you).
- Supply a V5c Registration Document (must be in the name of the applicant or proprietor)
- Current insurance certificate covering Hackney Carriage usage (Must Cover the start date of your licence)
- Valid MOT Test Certificate (Applicable for HC vehicles 12 months of age and beyond)
- A completed Vehicle Mechanical Examination Form (Find the Vehicle Mechanical Inspection Form PDF download below or email licensing@horsham.gov.uk to request an application form to be sent to you). NB. the completed form must be no older than 30 days following examination and must be signed and stamped.
- Certificate / Proofs of calibration and sealing from meter agent
- Bill of sale or proof of purchase (Receipt of purchase of the Vehicle)
- HPI Report if the vehicle is being licensed for the first time and the vehicle has had a previous owner
- Any HP Agreement Must provide document if agreement is in place at the time of application
- After successfully completing all the above, a payment link will be sent to you, for you to pay the appropriate Licence fee.
- Confirm type of plate bracket required
- Arrange collection of plate bracket
- Arrange an Inspection appointment with our Licensing Team
- Immediately following a satisfactory inspection, the Officer will plate your vehicle
A Hackney Carriage vehicle licence is valid for a period of one year and must be renewed upon expiry.
All licensed vehicles are required to be mechanically inspected every six months at a garage or garages nominated from time to time by the Council.
